How to detect gravity waves

Structure of the facility

LIGO's facility was buit like the old antennas that would go on top of TVs. They choose the design because it would basiclly preform the same task as the TV antennas. The antennas have to be just as big as the waves so they are able to detect the waves.

LIGO

LIGO’s facilities try to detect gravity waves by having giant antennas each a mile long that have a laser fired down each tunnel. At the end of the tunnel there would be a mirror that would reflect back the laser. When some occurense in space such as two black holes coliding together or when black holes are feeding on sace matter they should create gravity waves. When the gravity waves are travelling in space and come near Earth the Ligo facility will be able to pick up the waves. The way they will be able to pick of the waves is when the waves move one of the lasers in the tunnels. When the laser is moved one aser wll come back faster than the other. When this occurance happens they will have proved the exsistance of gravity waves.
